Always Elevating: This is the Black Soltice Show

A circle of creative energy. The sun above, the stars below.

That is The Black Solstice.

Imagine a place filled with people dressed in their most expressive, vibrant, and enigmatic garments. Every conversation carries curiosity. Every outfit tells a story. Every person contributes to an atmosphere overflowing with creativity, joy, and wonder. In many ways, that is the essence of The Black Solstice.

Although this year’s showcase took place in June, its story began more than two years ago. What started as a message of appreciation from one artist to another became an opportunity to reach a wider world through creativity and collaboration.

One of the first people to help shape that journey was D’Nia Defrance—model, coach, and, as she fittingly describes herself, an “Artful Chameleon” which she shows through her dedication to S.T.E.P, a program centered around helping models find their inner confidence.

As a Chicago native, D’Nia possesses a rare ability to bring talented people together. Throughout our time working alongside her, it became clear that her gift extends far beyond modeling; she creates opportunities for artists to grow together, a quality reflected throughout The Black Solstice community.

For The House of MARQUISALI, the past year has been filled with extraordinary milestones. We’ve had the privilege of attending Milan Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, as well as presenting work during New York Fashion Week and Philadelphia Fashion Week.

Yet among those remarkable experiences, Chicago left an unmistakable mark.

The spark came through The Black Solstice, led by DMV native, DJ, Creative Director, and fashion enthusiast Femi Wesu.

Guided by faith, vision, and an unmistakable passion for creativity, Femi has built what has become one of Chicago’s most anticipated annual fashion showcases. Now in its fourth year, The Black Solstice has become more than a runway show—it is a gathering place where designers, models, musicians, photographers, and attendees are encouraged to express themselves fully.

What makes the event memorable is not simply the fashion on display, but the people who fill the room. When surrounded by individuals who embrace creativity without reservation, the world somehow feels both smaller and infinitely larger at the same time.

This year’s theme, “Always Elevating,” was more than a slogan. It was reflected in every detail of the experience.

The showcase took place inside the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago—a space that stands as both a celebration and reminder of generations of history, resilience, and artistic achievement. Beneath its soaring dome, surrounded by light, music, and anticipation, the venue became more than a museum. It became a stage where imagination was given permission to flourish.

Collections ranging from avant-garde couture to contemporary streetwear filled the building, demonstrating the remarkable breadth of creative expression present throughout the city.

Chicago has always been shown to be bright and energetic, with its one-of-a-kind New York edge and Alabamian hospitality. This city is a unique gem that we look forward to building lasting relationships in. Thank you, Chicago, for all that you’ve introduced into the heart of our community. From Philadelphia to Chicago, true magic knows no bounds.

A Message from Mr. Ali

Walking through The Black Solstice, I felt as though the world had gathered in one place. It wasn’t only the designers who made the experience memorable—it was everyone who attended.

What stood out to me was that these weren’t simply people working in fashion. Fashion was part of who they were. They lived it, celebrated it, and used it as a language to express themselves.

As The House of MARQUISALI continues to grow, our responsibility is not only to create beautiful garments but to seek out communities that inspire us to serve people better. Chicago, and the people behind The Black Solstice, reminded me that fashion has the power to connect cultures, tell stories, and bring people together through shared creativity.

I’ll leave you with this:

The world is only as large as you’re willing to see it. Even someone without sight can imagine an entire universe. Yet the greatest blindness is failing to recognize God in the places where His presence is already moving.

To Femi Wesu, D’Nia Defrance, and every member of The Black Solstice team—thank you.

Each of you has left a lasting impression on me. The influence of this experience will reveal itself over time through the work we create, and I look forward to the next opportunity to build something beautiful together.

Special Thank You to the photographers, Videographers and models for making this such an amazing show, and experience.
